7th Grade Science Syllabus

Below You Will Find Important Information For 7th Grade Science

I would like to welcome everyone to this class. I am looking forward to, and have great expectations for, the upcoming school year. In order to get the most out of this class, I have included a list of guidelines that will be followed throughout the school year.

Glencoe Science is designed to teach science in precisely the way that students learn best: by thinking, talking, and writing about what they do and discover. Glencoe Science is activity and inquiry based—this program emphasizes hands-on science.

Overall, the goal of Glencoe Science is to introduce students to basic concepts associated with science, to address problem-solving techniques during laboratory investigations, to emphasize higher-level thinking each day, and to incorporate mathematics and literacy whenever possible.

Classroom Expectations: Please refer to Mr Tate’s classroom expectations sheet as well as to the Bromley East Charter School “parent/student handbook.”

Laboratory Safety: Please refer to the attached laboratory safety guideline sheet.

Grading: Assignments that are turned in on time are eligible for up to 100% of the possible points. Assignments that are turned in by 4:00 on the date they are due are eligible for up to 50% of the possible points. Assignments that are turned in anytime beyond 4:00 on the date they are due will receive an automatic grade of 0. The grading scale that will be used follows the BECS handbook.

Grades will be based on the following categories:
Daily Work Habits (According to the attached rubric)
Daily Homework & In-Class Work (including returned progress reports)
Laboratory Investigations
Assessments (Quizzes, Tests, Projects, Presentations)

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be sent home at end of the 3rd and 6th weeks each quarter in your student’s Friday folder—each student will then be required to return his/her progress report at the beginning of the following week with a parent and/or guardian’s signature on it (for a 10 point grade with each report).

Make-Up Work (for absences): Students will have 2 school days for every day’s excused absence to make up missed work. Students that miss school due to unexcused absence and/or out-of-school suspension will receive zero credit for any missed work (but must still complete the missed work in order to be eligible for extra credit (see below) later on).

Extra Credit: Generally, extra credit will not be given to those who currently have missing or incomplete assignments and/or assessments. My philosophy is that if a student has no time to complete the assigned work from class, then s/he also has no time to complete extra credit work as well. However, any student that is completely caught up with all previous assigned work for the quarter may complete as much extra credit as s/he chooses to do so.
